All that extra stuff that makes the bike your own…
Some “by stromers, for stromers” type stuff:
Problems, deficiencies, etc. related to the 05 DL1000.
The factory ECU is mapped wrong, resulting in a lean mixture at “low” RPMs. My experience is “low” means “below 4000 RPM”.
Suzuki knows about the problem and issued a service bulletin. There's a post about it at VSRI forums. I've been in contact with Nate at Beaverton Honda/Yamaha/Suzuki since a couple days after I bought the bike. Suzuki requires that their “regional service manager” give the OK before the work is done. We're waiting on him, still…
Update September 2009: Suzuki finally shipped a replacement ECM to Beaverton Honda Yamaha Suzuki. I brought my bike in and it took three minutes to replace the part that took three months to acquire. My Strom runs great now – all the runnability problems have disappeared.
The stock grips are really small and hard. They are mildly annoying even on my 12 mile commute. There are cheap replacements/additions that make for cushier, larger diameter grips, or heated grips for ~$100.
I purchased a pair of grip puppies in July 2009. After a few months of use, I can say they aren't much of an improvement. It's nice that the grips are wider now, but the comfort isn't any better.
A lot of DL1000 owners have claimed that replacing a couple spacers in the rear wheel with custom ones, shifted 2mm, smooths gear changes, fixes uneven/premature wear, etc. Rick on the VSRI forum sells replacement spacers in an exchange program. I need to investigate whether this is an actual problem on my bike. For $35, it may be worth trying, regardless.
